The United States central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
